Southern California Surfing
Thom, Chris, Rob & Scott
8/24/2002 - 8/25/2002

Well, another attempt at "becoming one" with the waves. Thom and I had business appointments in Central California on Monday and Tuesday, so we decided to head out of town a little early (Friday) and enjoy some time with our friends Scott Riley and Rob Lannes from One Touch Global Technologies in Orange County. Unfortunately, my quest for Zen on Water resembled more of a Bloody Battle.

We arrived on Friday evening and went directly to Fat Burger (for those of you who don't know about the legendary Fat Burger, ask me sometime). After a quick 1,500 Calories, we checked into our hotel and headed down to Huntington Beach to meet Scott for drinks and dinner. We walked out to the pier around dusk, then hung out on the strip in HB for some "mall watching" and a cup of Starbucks.

We started off the day early on Saturday morning on HB. The waves were small rollers, which would probably be good for learning. However, after just a couple of attempts on the inside, I came up a little early and unprotected to meet the board face-to-rail. It did a nice job on the bridge of my nose and added some chum to the water for the Great Whites in the area. After our awesome morning on the beach, we cleaned up, grabbed a Fat Burger (go figure) and headed down to San Diego. We stopped at Torrey Pines along the way and checkout out the Paraglider and Hang Glider pilots over the cliffs. We trucked on down Coronado, had a drink at the Hotel Del Coronado, then down to Imperial Beach and finally to Old Town for some awesome Mexican grub.

On Sunday, we took another shot at surfing at Trail 6 near San Onofre beach. We hiked down the cliffs with our gear and hung out at the area that looked like it had the best break. This also just happened to be a popular nude beach, so there were plenty of other people "hanging around" in their own way. Just to set the record straight (which much of the beach wasn't), this is not an area that you would go to when trying to find hot UCLA hotties. Anyway, there was an awesome swell that was producing some really good sets on the outside, but nothing other than rolling foam on the inside. The current and Rip was strong, so I decided to spare my life and tried working the inside. In reality, I don't think I could have paddled to the outside if I tried. I failed in my quest, once again, to get a good ride and packed it in for the day. Thom took the opportunity to hop on the board and try it himself. Due to the fact that he didn't have a wetsuit (but still much more on than "naked guy" who was cutting up the outside break), I believe he gained little more than a cheap "chest waxing" courtesy of Mr. Zoggs (surfing) Sex Wax.

All in all, another great weekend on the Pacific Coast, thanks to our hosts! Thanks again, Scott & Rob!
